MAY: JERSEY ROYALS

Updated: Jun 3, 2020

BRITISH, SEASONAL AND SUSTAINABLE PRODUCE CHAMPIONED EACH MONTH BY CHEF CRAIG HENNESSEY AT THE ROBIN HOOD INN

CHAMPION OF THE MONTH The fabulous flavour of Jersey Royal new potatoes arises from the unique growing conditions on the island. A true seasonal gem, around 99% of the crop is exported

The season is short-lived so gorge on them while you can.

Over half of Jersey’s total land area is in agricultural or horticultural use, which means it is no surprise that agriculture is one of Jersey’s largest industries. Jersey Royal new potatoes account for the vast majority of the island’s fresh produce exports.

Depending on the climate during the growing season (January to July), the total Jersey Royal crop usually ranges from 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes per year. At the peak of production in May, up to 1,500 tonnes are exported daily, with pickers working twelve hour shifts so that the Jersey Royals can reach supermarket shelves as fresh as possible.

Outside Jersey, mainland Britain is the only place where you can buy Jersey Royals. They are at their most plentiful and flavoursome from April to June, and can be purchased from most supermarkets and independent grocery retailers.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Jersey Royal Potatoes are famous for being the UK’s favourite new potato and are renowned for their unique taste, flavour, and delicate skins. However, not only do Jersey Royal Potatoes taste fantastic, they are also incredibly nutritious.

Unlike other carbohydrates, such as pasta and rice, potatoes are a great source of vitamin C, especially the skins (100g of Jersey Royal New Potatoes would provide you with 25% of the RDA for vitamin C).

Vitamin B is also present in potatoes and fundamental in helping carbohydrates work properly to provide energy for the body.  Vitamin B also helps maintain a healthy skin and nervous system.

It is a common myth that potatoes are fattening and they are often banished from the diet when people are trying to lose weight.  However potatoes are actually very low in fat and high in fibre so combined with exercise, are a fantastic way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

One of the First words in Hungarian I learnt when dating Tita was "Krumpli" translated to "spud", the folk term used for potato.

potato = Burgonya.

Spud = Krumpli

CHEF SAYS...

BUYING The early season potatoes are smaller and more tender, the later season ones larger and more flavourful; both are fabulous. Look for unwashed potatoes; they travel better wearing a jacket of earth.

STORING To enjoy them at their best buy just what you plan to use in the next two days and keep them in a cool, dark place.

PREPARING Leave the skins on - most of the flavour and goodness lies just beneath the surface - and give them a wash. Steam or boil until tender (15 - 20 minutes, cut larger potatoes in half if necessary) and add butter and other fresh herbs such as mint, chives or parsley as desired.
