The current pandemic has highlighted some of the negative effects that humans have on our environment.
reduced amounts of litter in the UK.
We may start to think that there may be a better way forward after lockdown?
Small changes with individual behaviour to protect the environment around us must become the new normal.
On the 16th March, Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people to work from home and avoid non-essential travel, going on to close schools and instruct people to stay home except for very limited reasons.
However Daily readings from air quality monitoring stations show that since 17th March, Some cities have seen nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels fall by up to 60% on the same period last year.
The world wide lockdown due to coronavirus is set to cause the largest ever annual fall in co2 emissions
Closer to home, the level of traffic on the road through Smithfield during the first weeks of lockdown was obviously a lot lower than previously. It was nice & peaceful. The only vehicles that passed would be local farm vehicles. Rather than the usual thundering HGV's & cars that normally plights the village and shakes the foundations of the pub on a daily basis. Since our forced closure, we have had mixed messages from our faltering government.
We have been waiting for the Single use plastic ban on the distribution and/or sale of plastic straws, stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds in England:
Not least since regualtions were drafted on 28 October 2019
According to the draft legislation
it will be an Offence: to engage in supply of single use plastic straws to an end user 4.—
(1) A person who, in the course of a business, supplies or offers to supply to an end user a single use plastic straw, other than an attached plastic straw, is guilty of an offence.
Here at The Robin Hood, we have been aware of the impact single use plastic has on our environment. Since the UK launch we have pioneered the Hay! Straws brand in the pub
We keep it all natural. Our straws are made from wheat stems that are cut, washed, sanitized by high heat and then packed in plastic-free packaging. 100% compostable & guilt-free.
#HAYstraws #wheatdrinkingstraws #farmtotable We now have individual boxes of straws available for collection, so you can enjoy sustainable drinks in your own home,
